How to Flash - Update Ilios

Our newest electronics for Ilios Kits, Ilios Ray and all other Ilios 3D printers have been developed in such a way that a user can update new features, fixes and update with ease with or without an internet connection through the Ethernet port on the Ilios UI module or WiFi. However not everyone has an internet connection and it may not always be available near the location of the 3D printer. For this reason we developed a simple software function for updating Ilios even without an internet connection, through a USB storage device.

Updating Ilios UI Firmware Offline

Updating the firmware offline is a very simple process. Here are the steps you need to go through to update to the latest version:

  1. Download the latest Ilios UI Firmware version from our Download section
  2. Unpack the archive and copy the 2 files (one of them being the Ilios.upd and the second the actual firmware) on your preferred USB storage device
  3. Connect the USB storage device to the Ilios UI module
  4. Go into Info -> Settings -> Update within the Ilios UI just like you normally would with an internet update
  5. Press "Update" and Ilios will check for an internet connection. If there is no connection it shall search the USB storage device for a new firmware and update Ilios with it as well as reboot Ilios with the new version.
  6. That's it!

Updating Ilios Control Board through Ilios UI

If you have a UI unit then the process of updating the Control board is very simple:

  1. Download the latest Control Board firmware version from our Download section
  2. Unpack the archive and copy the .HEX file on a USB storage device
  3. Connect the USB storage device to the Ilios UI module
  4. Go into Info -> Settings -> Flash and select the available firmware from the list
  5. Update the firmware and wait as the control board and the UI module will both reboot and enter into the new version together.
  6. That's it!

Flashing New UI Image

In the case where something went terribly wrong and the Ilios UI got corrupted, the internal storage erased or an unpredictable act of nature has prevailed, you can always re-flash Ilios with the latest Image which includes the operating system, the Ilios UI and all its functions. After flashing you shall be able to update normally and get the latest version if one is available, through the Ethernet connection on Ilios or manually as described above.

Here is what you need to do in order to flash the Ilios image on its internal storage:

  1. Open up the LCD Module and carefully remove the main board from it
  2. On the back of the board you shall find the MicroSD card with the firmware. Take it out
  3. Download the SD Formatter and the Win Disk Imager software
  4. Unpack and install both
  5. Download the latest Ilios Image from our Download section
  6. Unpack the file with WinZip or WinRar to reveal the .img file within
  7. Insert the microSD which you removed from the Ilios LCD module into your PC and run the SDFormatter software. Choose the corresponding drive, in the options select “Format Type : Quick, Format Size adjustment: ON” and format the microSD
  8. Close the program and open up Win32DiskImager
  9. Browse for the new firmware image you downloaded. Choose the correct drive where the MicroSD is located and press “Write”
  10. When it finishes, simply remove the SD card and install it into the LCD board. Power it up with the LCD connected first to make sure it works and then close everything up
  11. When closing up the LCD module, make sure you insert the computer board with the SD card side first into the enclosure and carefully try not to press the board so the card pops out again
  12. When installing the LCD module, be very careful that the LCD part mates well with the LCD connections on the board. You may need shift the LCD a bit upwards to fir the pins into the header. But don’t force it too much so you don’t bend the pins if you misaligned it
  13. That's it! Now you should have a fresh image on your Ilios 3D printer to update and use

Few things to have in mind after flashing a new image.

  • Enable the Ethernet connection in the User Interface on the LCD
  • Enable the Web Interface
  • Browse the Web interface and in the Printer Type choose the correct Printer Type you have from the list as well as the correct Z Height based on your configuration
  • Check for any updates for your new image by using the Update interface on the LCD or if an internet connection is not available, download and update manually as described above to get the latest version based on what is currently available in our Download section.
